Wastewater Reuse
UF and RO systems that treat wastewater for reuse as industrial water

01Wastewater collection tank
Collects the process wastewater and evens out changes in flow and quality. Submersible pumps send it to the following process at a steady rate.
Main components
- Concrete tank
- Submersible pumps
- Access hatches
- Level gauge
02UF membrane modules
Hollow-fibre membranes with very fine pores remove suspended solids, bacteria and colloids. They are backwashed regularly and cleaned with chemicals when needed. The backwash water is collected separately for treatment.
Main components
- UF modules
- Upper and lower headers
- Rack frame
- Automatic valves
03Activated carbon filter (ACF)
Adsorbs the organic matter, colour and residual chlorine left in the UF filtrate. It reduces fouling of the RO membranes downstream and protects them from chlorine damage.
Main components
- Pressure vessel
- Activated carbon bed
- Inlet distributor
- Underdrain
04Backwash tank and pump
Holds the filtered water, uses part of it to backwash the UF membranes and sends the rest to the RO. The backwash pump sends a reverse flow through the membrane modules.
Main components
- Backwash tank
- Backwash pump
- Discharge piping and valve
- Level gauge
05Reverse osmosis
Reverse osmosis membranes remove dissolved salts and remaining organics from the pretreated water to meet industrial water quality. The concentrate is discharged separately for treatment.
Main components
- Pressure vessels
- RO membrane elements
- High-pressure pump
- Header piping
06Treated water tank
Stores the reclaimed water and sends it to the industrial water system. A level gauge monitors the level so that supply can be matched.
Main components
- Storage tank
- Level gauge
- Outlet piping and valve
- Overflow pipe

Wastewater reuse plants treat factory effluent so that it can be used again as industrial water. Sand filtration, activated carbon filtration, MF or UF membrane filtration and RO bring the water to a quality that can be returned to the process.
The final wastewater treatment plant in Indonesia (POSCO E&C, 2012) is an 8,400 m³/day treatment and reuse plant. In Korea we delivered the wastewater recovery system for the Samsung Corning Precision Glass plant in Cheonan (2010, 1,290 m³/day) and the wastewater reuse system for RIST (2018, 320 m³/day).
